Where is Teaser? I thought he was coming with you. (Amy) He hurt his foot a couple of days ago, so his mom wants him to take it easy. (Juan) I twisted my ankle a couple of months ago and I had to stay home for two days. My mom gave me some aspirin and I started feeling better. (Amy) So Brainwave, what are you looking at? (Corty) Whoop, whoop, whoop, whoop, whoop, whoop, whoop. (Juan) Sorry, but you should have seen the look on your face. (Amy) Very funny. Now we’re even. We better go see what Corty wants. (Corty) Computer alert! Computer alert! Hey brainy ones. At the end of the last mission, we told all our friends that we would talk about the kinds of messages that our bodies receive from drugs. Some are very helpful, but some are very harmful. (Juan) Right you are. Lets get started. Ahh, how do we get started? (Corty) It’s easy. We’ll play, Use Your Brain Power. (Amy) Yes! (Juan and Amy) Hi Mom, Hi Dad, Hi. (Corty) Now, lets tell our viewers just how our game is played. I’ll ask a riddle and the first person to ring their bell, has thirty seconds to come up with a right answer. Are the contestants ready? (Amy) I’m ready. (Juan) Yea. Me too. Give us your best shot, Corty. (Corty) Ok, listen closely. Now, use your brain power. (Juan) I know that, it’s medicine. (Corty) Is that your final answer? (Juan) Yes. (Corty) You are absolutely correct. [Music and clapping] (Juan) Medicines are helpful drugs, that the doctor or our parents gives us when we’re not feeling well. Like aspirin when we hurt our foot, or cough syrup when we have a cold, but we have to follow the instructions when we use them. (Corty) Excellent! That answer was just what the doctor ordered. Now, here’s your second riddle, (Amy) It’s the brain! (Corty) You’re right! [Music] (Juan) Our brains work all the time. They keep our hearts beating, they let us know when we’re hurt, and they help us think. (Corty) Good Work! (Juan) Hey, I’ve got an idea. Why don’t we let our friends in the classroom answer some riddles. (Amy) Yea. We’ll supply the riddles. Then we’ll take a break so you guys can come up with the answers. (Juan) Ok. Here is the first riddle, (Amy) Made from molds? That is kind of funny. Ok. I’ll do the next one, (Juan) I think I know that. It’s, (Amy) No! Don’t say it. (Juan) Ooops. (Amy) Now we’ll take a break and give you a chance to think about those riddles. (Juan) When we come back, we’ll give you the right answers, and tell you some more things you’ll need to know about drugs. (Juan and Amy) See you in a few. [Music] (Amy) Well, how did you do? Did you get all the answers? (Juan) I did. (Amy) Only because you had help. (Corty) Who, me? (Juan) I’m busted. (Amy) That’s ok. They were pretty hard. (Juan) Here are the answers. Remember the first riddle? The answer is, Penicillin. Penicillin is a helpful drug, called an antibiotic. Your doctor may give you penicillin if you have an earache or another kind of infection, and it really is made from bread mold. (Amy) Yuck. (Juan) Now for the second riddle. Amy, care to do the honors? (Amy) Sure, It’s nicotine. Nicotine is a harmful drug found in tobacco, like cigarettes and cigars. Tobacco products are legal, but the nicotine makes them very dangerous. Using tobacco is a major cause of heart and lung disease. (Juan) I hope you guys got all of the answers, but there are other kinds of drugs you need to know about too… illegal drugs like marijuana, cocaine, and heroin. (Amy) They are illegal even for grown-ups because they are so dangerous. They send harmful messages to your whole body, especially your brain. (Corty) Hey, careful with the brain! (Juan) Alcohol is another drug that can be harmful to your brain and other parts of your body if you drink too much. Even adults shouldn’t drink too much. And remember, alcohol is illegal for kids. (Corty) It gives me a headache just thinking about it. Ok everybody. How about a bonus riddle? (Juan and Amy) Sure! Great! (Juan and Amy) The Cerebral Cortex! (Corty) And how did you know that? (Amy) Because it rhymes. [Juan and Amy laugh] (Amy) Not really. Actually, my cerebral cortex told me that the cerebral cortex is the part of the brain that we use to solve problems and make decisions. (Juan) We were using our brain stems the whole time for stuff like breathing. Our brain is always working, and we don’t even have to think about it. It’s really amazing. (Corty) Thank you. Thank you very much. And that wraps up another successful mission. (Juan) Today, we learned that some drugs are helpful and can make you feel better. (Amy) But some are harmful and can damage your brain. (Juan) Especially illegal ones. (Amy) Even good medicines can be bad for you if you take too much, just like cake and ice cream. The next time we get together, we’ll tell you more about nicotine and how it affects your body. (Juan and Amy) See you then! Ending Music – Brain Power! Talk about your fine machine. Brain Power!
